EastEnders has aired a shocking twist for Reiss Colwell as he tries to m.u.r.d.e.r his wife Debbie.
The accountant, played by Johnny Freeman, has been consumed with worry in recent weeks as money pressures take their toll.
After striking up a relationship with Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), Reiss started using his comatose wife Debbie’s savings to fund their IVF treatment.
But as the funds run dry, Reiss has been urged to pay Debbie’s care fees or she will be evicted from the facility. Debbie requires round the clock care after having a stroke but Reiss and Sonia were both dedicated to looking after her.
But during Wednesday’s trip to the Square (July 24), Reiss took a very dark turn. After Reiss told Sonia he is expecting funds in his account to cover Debbie’s fees, the expectant mum was feeling more positive.
While walking through the market, she stopped to speak to ex-husband Martin (James Bye) amd aired her frustrations at Debbie’s care home costs.
“If she slipped away it wouldn’t be a bad thing”, she said. “The care home fees are crippling us.”
Martin looked on awkwardly as Sonia realised how awful she sounded about Debbie’s state of health, and feeling gulity she paid Debbie a visit.
Later in episode, Sonia decided to sell her house she inherited from Dot Cotton to get her and Reiss out of debt.
Meanwhile, with the pressure getting to him after another visit from Sharon and a confrontation from Phil (Steve McFadden), Reiss then paid a visit to Debbie again.
Reiss broke down and spoke about the amount of debt he had got himself into, and how he wished Debbie could communicate with him and not live a ‘pitiful, pointless half life’.
Desperately telling himself a different story to ease his guilt, Reiss told Debbie that if she died, he could start over.
Not wanting to lose Sonia and their new baby, Reiss stood up, moved a pillow from behind Debbie’s head and gave her a k.i.s.s. on the forehead.
Reiss cried and looked down at Debbie as he prepared to smother her face. Will Reiss go through with it? Or will his conscious kick in?
As Sonia wished Debbie dead during her chat with Martin, will she be framed for the m.u.r.d.e.r?
