Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) looks set to marry killer Reiss Colwell (Johnny Freeman) in EastEnders after an unfortunate mistake.
As fans of the BBC soap know, devious Reiss has stolen a substantial amount of money from comatose wife Debbie’s care fund to pay for his and Sonia’s IVF treatment.
With the bills for her private hospitalisation mounting, he sorted to desperate measures by smothering her to death with a pillow
– but soon came face to face with her parents Brenda and Hugh Collins (Nichola McAuliffe and Michael Bertenshaw) who discovered that he’d stolen the money.
To make matters worse, some of the cash was what they’d paid into the account and Brenda threatened to report him to the police.
Sonia was taken aback by the man she loves’ actions, and sought advice from Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) regarding the legalities.
He told her that as Reiss has power of attorney over Debbie’s estate, it’s likely that there’s nothing her parents could do.
He did, however, question Reiss’ morality – something which Sonia didn’t want to hear.
Word soon spread around Walford and Sonia snapped in The Vic, tearing strips off the locals who were judging her.
She also noted that she felt like she was living in Debbie’s shadow.
Back at No. 25, Reiss was lounging around in his pyjamas and Sonia decided to try and perk him up. During a conversation about their future, she made an off the cuff comment about marriage and he assumed she was proposing – and accepted.
Later, she expressed concerns to ex-husband Martin (James Bye) about the misunderstanding and he urged her to come clean. However, at home, Reiss was eyeing up his online auction account to see if there had been any bids on Debbie’s engagement ring.
Reiss took it from her finger when he visited her in the morgue, and has since listed it for sale online.
