Brian Conley has revealed the real reason he left EastEnders.
The actor and comedian, 62, who played Rocky Cotton, departed the BBC One soap last year after two years on Albert Square as his character was arrested. Appearing on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain, chat soon got onto EastEnders and whether he could potentially return. Host Susanna Reid said of Brian’s character Rocky being in prison: “You haven’t been in EastEnders for six months, because you’re in prison of course, there’s a release date at some stage! You could go back… but you’ve said actually it’s probably too much?!”
This prompted Brian to open up about the real decision he decided to leave. The star said: “I left because you’re not allowed to do anything else. Although I’ve now found out you can but at the time they said you can’t do anything and I’m a live performer. I love being live, I love getting out there. Musicals, my own show, which I’m currently doing, and so for me I felt very restricted with those.”
Host Ed Balls then quipped: “You’re not keen on Rocky getting an early release then?” to which Brian admitted: “He might do, or you know, or I can make an escape! You just don’t know about these things but it is an amazing show.” It was revealed last year that Brian had quit the hit BBC One soap after first joining two years ago in 2021 and over Christmas his exit storyline was revealed.

In shocking scenes on Christmas Day, Keanu Taylor was killed by Linda Carter when he attempted to strangle Sharon Watts after she refused to let him see Albie. Earlier in the day, Sharon had called the wedding off, having learned that Keanu was a part of the kidnapping plot for Albie. As a result, Sharon revealed to Keanu that Albie wasn’t his son, before Phil Mitchell heard the truth – that he was the biological dad to Albie.
It led to a big confrontation when Keanu headed to the Queen Vic and as he strangled Sharon, Linda stepped in to save her. Prior to this, The Six had knocked out Nish Panesar, who had attempted to attack wife Suki, and they have blamed Nish’s serious head injury on Keanu, claiming at the time he had gone on the run.
The Six decided to bury the body after dragging it across the Square in a sheet of tarpaulin, hiding it in the derelict café following the fire. The Six thought their secret was safe until Rocky, who had attempted to go in the pub on Christmas Day before passing out drunk in Albert Square, dropped a bombshell. Rocky told estranged partner Kathy Beale that he remembered details from such as the women carrying tarpaulin across Albert Square and that he had a ‘gut feeling’ she was in ‘trouble’.

A panicked Kathy met with The Six to tell them what had happened and it wasn’t long until Suki had a suggestion. Prior to Christmas, Rocky staged a fire at his wife Kathy’s café as he continued to struggle with debt problems due to his gambling addiction. The women decided to shop Rocky to the police for the café fire as he would be more worried about himself in prison than piecing together what happened on Christmas Day. Rocky was later arrested in dramatic scenes at the Queen Vic for criminal damage by fire, where life was endangered.
Taking to social media after the episode aired, the actor shared a picture of himself as Rocky, writing: “Well Rocky, you pretended to be Sonia’s Dad, Had two heart attacks, Married Kathy Beale, Met the King of England, Your best mate’s with Harry Redknapp, You blew up the cafe, and had a pet parrot called Jasper. Gonna miss you, you old rascal. X.”
