EastEnders: Anna Knight accidentally learns Bobby’s secret after he leaves Walford. Will she decide to “chase after love” or “give up”?

Eastenders is to feature a new storyline that will see character Anna Knight have her drink spiked.

Viewers of Tuesday night’s episode (16th July) will see Anna get spiked whilst on a night out at Peggy’s.

In the programme, her friends believe that Anna’s behaviour is down to alcohol, and the incident initially goes unnoticed, but Anna’s friends soon become concerned for her welfare.

EastEnders is working with leading charities Stamp Out Spiking and WithYou as well as experts in the field to ensure the storyline is portrayed “as accurately and as sensitively as possible.”

Spiking is still a common crime

In 2023 Hits Radio launched the #SPIKED investigation – exploring the realities of spiking in the modern era.

It found almost half of women had been spiked, or knew someone who has.

Check out the eye-opening findings, and what campaigners, police and victims want to see done about it:

Dawn Dines is CEO and Founder at Stamp Out Spiking, who appears in the investigation.

Speaking about the new Eastenders plotline, she said: “EastEnders is a wonderful vehicle to drive the safeguarding message and with its huge popularity amongst a wide range of the public, it will help inspire conversations to help protect men and women being targeted.

“Education is key to preventing these incidents. Stamp Out Spiking are delighted to have taken part in bringing the essential storyline to the screen.”

The incoming Labour government told our investigation it planned to change the law to introduce spiking as a specific offence – something the previous government refused to do.

Campaigners also hope programmes like Eastenders can continue to help raise the profile of the issue to millions of viewers.

Getting support after being spiked

Abie Wilson, Lead Clinical Pharmacist at WithYou added: “We’d like to thank EastEnders for giving us the opportunity to work together on such an important storyline.

“After Anna’s drink is spiked, she is helped to safety by her friends, and so we always advise being with people you trust and who will look out for you when partying.

“For anyone affected by this storyline, or who’s experiencing challenges with drugs, alcohol, or mental health, we encourage you to access support.”
