Almost 19 years since Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) had step-mother Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) banged up for the m.u.r.d.e.r of her father Den (Leslie Grantham), the two women will to come face-to-face next week – and it is set to be explosive.
Actress Tracy-Ann Oberman has spoken out about reprising her role as k.i.l.l.e.r Chrissie, after she made an earlier-than-billed return in Thursday’s game-changing episode.
With Sharon having been sent to prison for being in contempt of court following her outburst at Dean Wicks’ (Matt Di Angelo) m.u.r.d.e.r trial, she is currently unaware that Chrissie is residing in the cell next door to her’s.
‘When I read the script, I just kept thinking this is like Orange is the New Black meets Prisoner Cell Block H, meets Bette Davis and Joan Crawford,’ Tracy-Ann says of her comeback storyline. ‘It was just great.’
She promises ‘a real rollercoaster of a ride’ for Sharon and Chrissie when they are finally reunited.
‘It’s the meeting of two strong Watts women, but 19 years have elapsed. Is Chrissie pleased to see an old friendly face? Or has she used the last 20 years to fester on what Sharon did to her which was not letting her escape with Jake, the love of her life,’ Tracy-Ann teases.
Fans will remember how Chrissie bludgeoned Den to death in The Queen Vic, as she confronted her husband with Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) and Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) about his various misdeeds.
At the time, Chrissie let Zoe believe she had killed Den despite finished him off herself and implicating Sam in the cover-up.
She was eventually arrested at an airport while trying to flee the country with Jake Moon (Joel Beckett) in December 2005, with Sharon helping to bring her to justice.
‘They were once extremely close but Chrissie m.u.r.d.e.r.e.d her father and lied to her about it,’ Tracy-Ann continues. ‘But equally they did trust each other, and they both understood each other very well. I think all the emotions will be present – love, jealousy, hatred, passion, joy and revenge.
‘Will there be a resolution? That is the big question over the week and will they both come out of it alive and will they both come out of it with some closure? Who knows…’
Tracy-Ann also reveals that Chrissie has changed since we last saw her, telling of how she has ‘risen to the top’ in since being in prison – as was suggested in her comeback scene in Thursday, when a prison officer was seen giving her contraband cigarettes.
‘I don’t think she’s softened, if anything I think she’s gotten harder because she’s had to survive,’ she explains.
‘She’s obviously had a really tough time in prison and let’s not forget that she put Sam Mitchell behind bars, and the Mitchells have got long arms that reach into all sorts of areas.
‘She’s not the youngest of the prisoners, and she’s not the physically toughest of the prisoners but she’s definitely got something about her. She’s got charisma and charm, and the key thing for Chrissie is that she’s got very powerful skills of persuasion so she has risen to the top.’
On reuniting with Letitia Dean – who plays Sharon – on the set of their prison scenes, Tracy-Ann adds: ‘We both looked at each other after a couple of scenes and went, “wow, this is really good”.
‘We work extremely well together. We both work really hard, but we laugh a lot, and she is an absolute joy; I just love her.’
