Could The Six soon become the Seven as Sonia Fowler faces a murder trial?
While BBC One viewers are aware that Sonia’s fiancé Reiss Colwell is the real culprit, authorities are convinced that the beloved nurse has smothered Debbie Colwell to death with a pillow in an attempt to cash in on her life insurance money.
With all the evidence pointing to Sonia, the accountant portrayed by Jonny Freeman was able to walk free from his questioning and this Thursday’s (August 22) instalment of the London-based programme ended with Sonia’s dramatic exit as she was taken away to prison to await her trial, as revealed by an early BBC iPlayer release.
But as the drama unfolded, Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) and Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) discussed the situation in the café, prompting the latter to reveal Reiss had scammed her and Phil Mitchell out of a lot of cash.
Stacey, Kathy, Sharon all witnessed Keanu Taylor’s murder last Christmas, while Jack was told the truth about the hunk’s death later on. However, Reiss may also have grief with another member of the Six as Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) gave Debbie’s ring to Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) during her proposal, which may be an element the authorities remember while investigating Debbie’s murder, landing Eve into trouble.
This may suggest that, however it may turn out, Reiss could be the Six’s next victim, in an accidental or even premeditated move. The Six have already taken down one abusive husband, Nish Panesar, but could they join forces again to stop Reiss? Could it all spiral out of control, causing another death?
Regular soap viewers will remember that Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) stabbed Keanu to death in a big to save Sharon from his clutches, as he was strangling her during a tense confrontation at the Queen Vic. Keanu was found buried underneath Kathy’s café, where the Six (which also include Denise Fox) had disposed of him.
Since then, Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) was conveniently framed for his murder but his upcoming trial threatens to expose the Six’s secret to light, particularly as Keanu’s sister Bernie (Clair Norris) got involved.
Dragged to prison and away from all her loved ones in Walford, Sonia will not be back in the Square for a while as Natalie Cassidy is taking a break from the soap to front a new project.
In late July, 2024, it was confirmed that the soap star, who has portrayed fan favourite Sonia since her EastEnders debut in 1993, would temporarily leave the long-running show after being poached by a rival channel.
Natalie, 41, is now set to front a four-part series on Channel 4 titled What’s The Big Deal?, where she will look into popular household products that have taken homes by storm around the nation after the show’s successful first edition, focused on the popularity of air fryers.
Speaking to The Sun about the project, a source said at the time: “Natalie will be taking a short break, just like many of her co-stars do when they have another project. Bosses always try to let stars spread their wings and if they can make it work with the often punishing soap schedule then they’ll do it.” They added: “Natalie’s really excited to tackle the project for Channel 4. This is another string to her bow.”
