Prince William is reportedly fuming over his brother Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s latest visit to Colombia, as tensions between the Sussexes and the Royal Family continue to escalate. The trip, which has been labeled a “faux royal tour” by some royal commentators, has allegedly struck a nerve within the palace.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex embarked on a four-day visit to the South American nation at the invitation of Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Márquez. Their itinerary includes engagements with community members and participation in a cultural music event. However, the trip’s royal-like undertones have reportedly sparked anger in Prince William, who is said to be keen on distancing the monarchy from the Sussexes’ actions.
Prince William’s Frustration
Royal expert Tom Quinn revealed that Prince William is deeply frustrated by the comparisons being made between the Sussexes’ visit and official royal duties. Quinn told the Mirror US, “William would like to issue a statement reminding everyone that Meghan and Harry’s tour of Colombia is not in any way officially sanctioned, but his father, King Charles, is steadfast in his belief that silence is the best response.”
The tension stems from the fact that, despite stepping back from their roles as working royals in 2020, Harry and Meghan continue to engage in activities that resemble official royal engagements. Quinn added, “Arranging these fake Royal tours will make any chance of a reconciliation between Harry and his family even more remote.”
“Outlaw Royals” and Royal Protocol
The trip has led some commentators to dub Harry and Meghan as the “outlaw royals,” a title that reflects their continued divergence from royal norms. The Colombian visit is seen by some within the palace as a direct challenge to royal protocol, with Quinn noting that the tour is perceived as “Harry sticking two fingers up at Royal protocol and family feelings.”
While King Charles and Prince William reportedly feel powerless to stop the tour, they are said to be furious over what they perceive as another attempt by the Sussexes to leverage their royal status for personal gain. “The harder the faux royals try to improve their brand, the more they damage the genuine royal brand,” Quinn stated, highlighting the concern within the royal ranks.
Concerns Over Future Visits
There is growing anxiety within the Royal Family about where Harry and Meghan might choose to visit next. According to Quinn, “More worrying for the senior Royals is that Harry and Meghan have been approached by several countries with dubious political regimes—just the sort of countries the Royals themselves would avoid in case their reputations were tarnished.”
As the Sussexes continue to forge their own path, the rift between them and the rest of the Royal Family appears to be widening, with little hope of reconciliation on the horizon. The Colombian tour, which was meant to highlight causes close to the Sussexes’ hearts, has instead become another flashpoint in the ongoing royal feud.
